How we review AI tools

Our methodology for researching, testing, and rating every tool in the directory. Designed to be fair, repeatable, and independent of advertising.

How we test

Every tool in the directory is evaluated through hands-on use. For each category, we run a consistent set of representative tasks — a 1,000-word article for AI writing tools, identical prompts across image generators, the same React component requests across coding assistants, and so on. This makes comparisons fair and repeatable rather than based on marketing claims.

What we score on

Every tool gets evaluated on five dimensions: output quality, ease of use, pricing value, feature depth, and reliability of updates. We weight these differently by category — for example, brand voice control matters more for AI writing tools than for image generators, while privacy and on-premise options matter more for coding assistants. Each tool is rated out of 5.

How often we update

We re-verify every tool on a rolling basis at least quarterly. Pricing, features, and rating are updated when the product changes meaningfully. Each tool page displays a 'Last verified' date so you can see exactly when the information was last confirmed. If something looks stale, it probably is — tell us and we will re-check.

Editorial independence

Reviews, ratings, and recommendations are decided independently of advertising relationships. Some links on the site are affiliate links — meaning we may earn a commission if you sign up — but affiliate status does not influence which tools we recommend, which get higher ratings, or where they appear in our rankings. Sponsored placements are clearly labeled.

What we include — and what we don't

We include tools that genuinely solve real problems, have an active product team, and have been usable for at least 3 months. We exclude tools that are vaporware, abandoned, or that exist primarily as a wrapper around another AI model with no meaningful additional value. We do not include tools just because they pay — every advertised tool still has to meet our quality bar.

Affiliate and sponsorship disclosure

Many links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and sign up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We disclose this on every page that contains affiliate links. Some tools also pay for promotional placements (Featured, Sponsor, Newsletter, etc.) — these are visually distinguished from editorial content with a 'Sponsored' or 'Featured' badge.

Have feedback on a review?

If a tool's information looks out of date or you disagree with our assessment, we want to know. Honest feedback makes the directory better.
